2020 action month for gender equality underway in Long An province

Over the past years, the Mekong Delta province of Long An has achieved outstanding results in gender equality and gender-based violence prevention.

On November 10, Long An Provincial People's Committee launched Action Month for gender equality and prevention of gender-based violence in 2020 with the theme "Ending violence against women and girls". 

Over the past years, Long An has achieved outstanding results in gender equality and gender-based violence prevention. Specifically, awareness of the Party committees, authorities, officials, Party members and people about the position, role and importance of gender equality for the development of society and community has been clearly raised. The propaganda of the law on gender equality has been very practical and has reached more target groups. The role and position of women in the workplace, family and society have been increasingly improved.

However, domestic violence, discrimination against women and girls still occurs in some places with many different forms. According to statistics, in Long An province, in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, domestic violence was 68 cases, 128 cases, 60 cases (49 victims were women) and 48 cases, respectively. It is worth mentioning that many cases of sexual abuse against girls have had serious consequences (in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and the first 6 months of 2020, the number of sexual abuse cases was 23, 13, 19, 29, 32 and 1, respectively).

Speaking at the event, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Pham Tan Hoa affirmed that the Action month for gender equality and prevention of gender-based violence in 2020 is an important highlight of the year. The action month is from November 15 to December 15, creating a peak in promoting gender equality and gender-based violence prevention.

In order for the Month of action to be effective, he suggested departments, agencies, unions, districts, towns and cities to develop plans and implement activities in Action Month 2020 at the agencies and units. At the same time, departments, branches, unions and localities should organize meetings and praise typical people in the prevention of gender-based violence; promote the mobilization of resources to implement action months; strengthen the socialization of communication activities and support victims, women and children in difficult circumstances; organize interdisciplinary inspection teams for the advancement of women and gender equality in the units and localities during the month of action, and so on.

On this occasion, the Provincial People's Committee presented 20 gifts to children in extremely difficult circumstances; each gift was worth 1.5 million VND (including a scholarship worth 1 million VND and learning tools worth 500,000 VND).
