Campaign underway to raise awareness on gender equality

The Gender Responsive Equitable Agriculture and Tourism (GREAT) Program and its 17 partners are implementing a gender equality awareness-raising campaign in six districts of Lao Cai and Son La provinces.

The Gender Responsive Equitable Agriculture and Tourism (GREAT) Program is an initiative that promotes gender equality and women’s economic empowerment, with a focus on the ethnically diverse provinces of Son La and Lao Cai in Vietnam’s north-west.

To celebrate Vietnamese Women’s Day on October 20, GREAT partners such as Department of Culture and Information of Sa Pa, Division of Quality Control of Agriculture Products and Fisheries in Lao Cai, Red Dao Community Cooperative and Sapanapo, organised the opening event in Ngu Chi Son Commune, Sa Pa Town, Lao Cai province.

Activities include photo contests, role plays, games, sports competitions and traditional dances.

The Gender Equality Day, held in Ban Lien commune on October 19, is part o the Photo Voice contest "Happiness comes from simple things" co-organized by Helvetas and Women's Union of Bac Ha and Bat Xat districts, Lao Cai province.

It contributed well to the communication campaign "The Journey of Happiness" by GREAT Partner Network, and in response to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's "Frontline Women" Month of Action.

Through various cultural and entertainment activities of ethnic minorities, the event has created a fun playground, strengthen relationships between beneficiary households of the projects, authorities and local mass organizations, raising the awareness and practice of the target groups and regional communities on gender equality such as women confidently participate in production and services; women confidently act as leaders, couples equally share housework and make decisions.
