Vietnam is among the top one-third of the world's leading countries in terms of female National Assembly representation and female labor participation, ranking 68th out of 166 countries in the Gender Development Index. Vietnam is one of ten countries to best perform the fifth target of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals on advancing gender equality and empowering all women and girls.
The Action Month is held from November 15 to December 15 every year nationwide, aiming to call for special attention on gender equality and prevention of gender-based violence in order to create positive changes in society for women and children.
On November 12, the Lang Son Committee for the Advancement of Women held a launching ceremony of the Action Month for gender equality and gender-based violence prevention and control in 2020 with the theme “Ending violence against women and children”.
Attending the launching ceremony were Duong Xuan Huyen, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee, Head of the Provincial Committee for the Advancement of Women; leaders of departments, agencies and unions in the province; leaders of the People’s Committees, committees for the advancement of women in districts, the city and a large number of young people in Lang Son city.
Over the past years, the Provincial Committee for the Advancement of Women has actively coordinated with all levels, sectors and committees for the advancement of women in districts, the city in the province to synchronously implement specific tasks and solutions to gradually achieve important objectives in the National Strategy on Gender Equality in the 2011-2020 period, contributing to bringing the Law on Gender Equality to life.
Propaganda, dissemination and education of the law on gender equality and for the advancement of women has been strengthened, contributing to raising awareness and responsibilities of organizations, individuals and families in implementing the goal of eliminating discrimination against gender, gender stereotypes, towards real gender equality.
In all fields of politics, economy, culture and society, there is the participation of both men and women. Female cadres holding key positions at all levels have been strengthened; the proportion of female employees participating in the labor market is increasing; women’s classes have increasingly asserted their roles and positions in the family and in society.
However, besides the achieved results, there are still certain limitations such as high sex ratio imbalance at birth; gender inequality, especially family violence and discrimination against women and girls occurring in varying forms and degrees in some target groups in some areas and localities; existing child abuse and so on.
The Action Month in 2020 titled “Ending Violence Against Women and Children”, is from November 15 to December 15, 2020.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, the Vice Chairman of Lang Son People’s Committee requested that based on the actual situation of localities and units, departments, committees, agencies, socio-political organizations, People’s Committees of districts and the city synchronously implement propaganda and education on gender equality and gender-based violence prevention and control in various forms with peak series of activities in response to the Action Month; develop and disseminate communication materials/products about the message of the Action Month such as slogans, leaflets, banners, reportages and so on.
At the same time, it is required to effectively implement the project “Preventing and responding to gender-based violence in the 2016-2020 period and a vision to 2030 in Lang Son province”. In particular, each district and city has to build at least one model of “Trustworthy addresses – temporary shelters in the community” to “prevent and mitigate the harmful effects of gender-based violence” to support those who might run a high risk of gender-based violence.
On this occasion, the Provincial Committee for the Advancement of Women gave gifts to five women with difficult circumstances rising in life in Lang Son city.
After the launching ceremony, 60 youth union members of the city marched to propagate on some main streets in Lang Son city.
