New Program Protects Children Orphaned by the Covid-19

The Vietnam Women's Union in collaboration with the Supreme People's Court held a ceremony to respond to the "Godmother" program, aiming to support and nurture orphaned children affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Responding to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's call for unity in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and Prime Minister's Decision No. 1497, the "Godmother" program is a practical solution to a tragic issue. This program is the compassionate brainchild of the Vietnam Women's Union.

According to the draft report on the contents of the "Godmother" program, the beneficiaries are children under 18 years old orphaned by Covid-19 who have difficult circumstances. Each child is initially supported at VND2 million (US$86.65). For a number of children in special circumstances (with serious illness, fostering families in difficulty), the one-time support level is from VND10 to 20 million (US$433 to 866)/child.

Additionally, depending on specific conditions, union members, in collaboration with other governmental organizations, will register to directly sponsor orphaned children in difficult circumstances. They regularly visit and discuss with their families and children to provide both material and spiritual support, and ensure that the children have a stable and well-developed life; Savings with interest to support the program; Support children in the learning process; Health counseling, psychological counseling, legal advice.

The program consists of 2 phases: Phase 1 from November 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022, supporting and sponsoring children under 18 years old orphaned by Covid-19 with difficult circumstances in Dong Nai, Binh Duong, HCMC. Phase 2, from April 1, 2022 to December 31, 2024, will support and sponsor children under 18 who have lost their parents due to the Covid-19 pandemic with difficult circumstances, in 63 provinces and cities nationwide.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nguyen Hoa Binh, chief justice of the Supreme People's Court welcomed the initiative of the Vietnam Women's Union in the "Godmother" program. He emphasized that supporting orphans due to the Covid-19 pandemic is not only a short-term job but a long-term commitment, so it needs many organizations, units and benefactors to accompany the program. In particular, President Nguyen Phuong Nga, Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations will be the bridge between foreign donors and the program. On this occasion, the Chief Justice said that the Supreme People's Court contributed and supported the program VND200 million (US$8665).

At the ceremony, the Vietnam Children's Fund, the Union of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Banking sector pledged to accompany and support the "Godmother" program. Deloitte Vietnam is also committed to supporting disadvantaged high school students in the 2021-2024 period.

Ha Thi Nga, president of the Vietnam Women's Union, pledged that the Union would organize and supervise activities to support orphaned children due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Union commits to use the right purposes, effectively the budget, as well as has a long-term plan with the "Godmother" program.

"With all its efforts, the Vietnam Women's Union wishes that the orphaned children due to the Covid-19 pandemic and then all orphans will receive the attention and care from the government, especially the mothers in the "Godmother" program. We will contribute to erase the 'scars,' the mental shock for children who have gone through the most difficult time when their parents are gone, so that they can be taken care of in a comprehensive way and become the future owners of the country".
